Bulb Industry
Southland is uniquely suited to the production of high value bulb crops including tulips, lilies and daffodils. The area has a cool temperate climate with good rainfall and some areas of sandy, free draining soils. The other major environmental benefit is the long summer days due to the fact that the whole province is south of the 45 degree line of latitude.
There is an existing infrastructure with several large companies already growing bulbs in the area. Existing chemical companies, freight and packing facilities are able to help new companies get established.
In 2001/2002 Crops for Southland worked with local government and growers, to establish a code of practice for the industry.
