commercial returns
For seven years Crops for Southland ran a commercial flower growing business at the New Crop Centre near Invercargill. On this site Paeonies, Astilbe, Hydrangeas, Lady's Mantle, Viburnum, Billy Buttons and a few other crops were grown on a small scale. The crops were harvested, packed and shipped to mainly overseas markets, with the returns coming back to the Centre to help offset running costs.
All crop management work in each production season, along with its associated material and labour costs, was recorded in a 'Diary of Operations'. Returns obtained at market were also recorded. From the resulting comprehensive record of income and expenditure a Gross Margin was calculated for each crop.
