(Olearia traversii)
Introduction
Olearia traversii, also known as Tree Daisy or akeake, is one of a number of Olearias that can be grown. This particular species produces a bush 5m tall when mature. Each season lengths of new plant material 40–50cm long are produced with small green leaves on them. It is this growth that can be cut and sold. This particular species was one of the few plants that survived the extremely cold conditions suffered in Southland in the winter of 1996.
Like many of the foliage plants, a market does exist but the end users (florists) are not prepared to pay enough for it to justify the costs of growing, picking, packing and shipping it outside of New Zealand. This means local market sales are about the only option.
