Southland is well suited to several types of land use due to its unique climate. Moderate rainfall spread across all seasons means there is high pasture growth and little need for prolonged irrigation through the summer months. Southland also has high sunshine hours and UV light, producing flowers that have particularly vibrant colours. The temperate climate means that animals are rarely stressed by extremes of heat or cold, and there are reduced impacts of insect pests, viruses and fungi.
Topoclimate South
The Topoclimate survey was initiated by
Crops for Southland in 1998, to more precisely acquire information on the region’s climate and soils. This identified microclimates, allowing growers and farmers to produce a wider range of crops and pastures, which in turn improves diversification and reduces risk. For information on soil and climate data in your area, please contact Venture Southland, or view the
Environment and Land Information section of this site.
