recycling, waste management
There are three local authorities in Southland responsible for waste management and they have collaborated together as “Waste Net Southland” for a regional approach to waste management issues. A number of goods such as paper, glass, and some plastics are recycled, with some urban areas offering curb side collection of recyclable materials. There are a number of transfer stations in the region for public use, waste collected is compacted and transferred to a regional landfill for disposal. How a new development plans to deal with waste is required to be addressed in a resource consent application under the Resource Management Act 1991.
