A Southland new year resolution list

I’ve given up on having new year’s resolutions starting with ‘I will stop’ or ‘I will give up’, as it inevitably lasts a week or two before times get tough and I retreat to my old ways. This year however I’ve taken a new approach to the new year and instead, making a list of things I want to do and see in Southland before the year is up. This Southland new year resolution list made me think about what I’d already seen and done in Southland and what my personal favourites were. If you’re like me and are making a ‘To do in Southland 2012’ list make sure you tick these off your list (at least once!)

1. Visit the Croydon Aircraft Museum – The collection of beautiful old de Havilland aircraft is great and there history is really interesting.  If you have time you can go for an aerobatic flight in the Tiger Moth.

2. Fly into Mason Bay on Stewart Island – This is one of the best things you can do in Southland.  Flying onto the bay and landing on the beach is very cool!  You can stay overnight at the Mason Bay hut where kiwi are often spotted at night.

3. Stay at the Riverton Rocks – Riverton is one of the loveliest towns you can visit in the South and it is so relaxing.  There’s plenty of cribs to rent and everything is a short walk away.  There’s also a range of great cafes on offer too.

4. Eat the Seafood Chowder at the South Sea Hotel on Stewart Island– What more can I say, just try it!

5. Dine at Louies Café in Invercargill – For some of the best seasonal, local food in Southland, head to Louies.  If sitting next to a fire, with great NZ wine is your thing, you’ll love this place!
