Venture Southland is launching its latest marketing of a nationwide festival that is increasing in popularity all around the country.
Matariki or Maori New Year is something special for all New Zealanders to share. For many Maori, Matariki signals the beginning of a new cycle of life and a time to reflect on the previous year. However, today Matariki has a wider significance as it celebrates the unique place in which we live and giving respect to the land we live on.
To celebrate this year's Matariki season in Southland, Venture Southland has produced a brochure which details the various events that are being held around the province over the month of June. Events include a Maori Wearable Arts Design show, a Talk about the Matariki constellations by Astronomy guru Lloyd Esler, the Matariki Masked Ball, a Matariki Breakfast and a screening of the Vincent Ward film, Rain of the Children.
The feature event, organised by Venture Southland, is the Wairoa Maori Film Festival which is coming to Invercargill on Saturday June 6 for a one-night only showing at Repertory House.
Angela Newell, Creative Projects Manager at Venture Southland, said that Matariki was becoming an important celebration and the opportunity to view a series of short films made by indigenous New Zealand directors was a great way of connecting to the country's unique Maori heritage, nature, creativity and expression.
"The Wairoa Film Festival is a significant initiative in bringing Maori writers, directors and actors to the forefront of our film industry. The festival should appeal to all those interested in our cultural heritage, filmmakers and all those interested in cinema," she said.
