And for the new Mayoral Robes - a kilt ... a Southland flag!

The search for alternate up-to-date mayoral robes for Invercargill went up a notch as student representatives for Southland Spirit of a Nation at St. Theresa's School modelled some options for Mayor Shadbolt.

Bradley Jackson and Jennifer Stone dressed up for the mayor as a preview for the school's 20 hour World Vision event that will be attended by students in alternate mayoral robes.

45 pupils from St. Theresa’s will be staying overnight at school on Friday 21 May to take part in a 20 hour famine with a variety of fun activities organised by Year 4 teacher Miss Gemma Forde.

“We’re going to turn the famine into an overnight camp out, with everything from dancing to sport to spotlight” said Miss Forde.

The weekend activities will include touch rugby and netball with Southland sporting celebrities, games with Gerry Forde, Southland Spirit of a Nation Brand Manager and a fashion parade to find the best alternate mayoral robes for Mayor Tim Shadbolt.

All children will come to the event dressed in an outfit that they would like to see the mayor of Invercargill wear as his official robes.

The children will be allowed some food over the 20 hour period and in keeping with the schools religious tradition it will be restricted to ‘the type of food Jesus would have eaten.’

“This will come as quite a shock to the children with the main item on the menu being unleavened bread,” said Miss Forde.

The children have had a trial of this and year five student, Joshua Buckby is fine with a sparse menu.

"I'm choosing to do the famine because I want to help people in the world who are sick and injured,” he said.

Elles Road New World is supplying backup of grapes and bananas in addition to the ingredients for the unleavened bread.

Southland Spirit of a Nation Spirit Reps, Bradley Jackson and Jennifer Stone are taking a leadership role with the event and are very excited about making a difference in the lives of children in developing countries.

"I'm doing the famine to raise money for the poor people. I'm excited about sleeping in the school hall; hopefully Miss Forde won't pull any pranks on us!" Said year 6 student and Spirit of a Nation representative, Jennifer Stone.

Last year the school raised $1200. Donations can be made to support the children by going to www.famine.org.nz and search St Theresa’s school.
