One outstanding Southland quality is our concern for each other and for those less advantaged.

St. Theresa’s teacher, Gemma Forde, discovered this when her idea of a sleepover to celebrate and fundraise for the World Vision Famine was met with huge support.

Forty five children turned out for the overnight hall camp-out with teachers, parents and teacher’s aides happy to roster. Food was limited to “what Jesus would have eaten” with fruit and ingredients for unleavened bread supplied by Elles Road New World.

The children spent the 20 hours playing old style games like Seaweed, Candlestick, Sneak up Granny and Hide and Seek by spotlight just before bed. With parents and teachers on hand, the event ended with much welcomed sausages from Gerry McSoriley to celebrate the success. Miss Forde was expecting the funds raised to be around $1200.

Southland Spirit of a Nation School representatives had attracted media attention with a parade of alternate mayoral gowns as part of the entertainment.

"This is true community spirit at its best!" said Southland Spirit of a Nation brand manager, Gerry Forde who joined the students for the 20 hour event.
