This week senior citizens of Southland joined forces with local rest home managers to help raise awareness of abuse and neglect among the elderly.

Janette Turner, of Age Concern Southland organised an afternoon tea to thank rest home managers for all the work they have been doing to minimise the issue and to remind them that all residents are somebody’s mother or father and should be taken care of and respected.

Age Concern elder abuse and neglect prevention services confirm a least two cases of elder abuse each day, on average.

"Some people think that because someone is old, it doesn’t matter what happens to them anymore. They make decisions for the older person without even asking them what it is they want. Or they pressure them into things they don’t really want to do – like giving a loan, or selling their house, or letting a family member move in with them for free.

“We believe attitudes like this show a lack of respect for the older person, for their quality of life, and for their needs,” Janette said.

Southland Spirit of a Nation Brand Coordinator, Gerry Forde was invited to speak at the afternoon tea and got attendees actively involved through the use of role play. Gerry’s talk focused on older health issues and finding new strengths.

Janette said the older people enjoyed his vibrant, positive attitude and his dedication to the region.
