Chris Kennedy from James Hargest College participated in the Bike, Walk and Bus to School Day on Friday 24 September, part of the conservation programme run at the college by Megan Smith.
It was a bitterly cold day but Chris braved the elements and had no trouble carrying the Southland Spirit of a Nation flag to the grounds.
Students who biked, walked or took the bus to school received prizes under the guidance of Southland Spirit of a Nation brand coordinator Gerry Forde.
Ms Smith said that she intends to hold the event again in better weather.
