Venture Southland's Creative Projects Manager, Angela Newell, previews the Invercargill Musical Theatre Company’s latest production.
Yes, that good old Lloyd-Webber/Rice chestnut from the seventies. Ah, I remember it well - thrashing it on the record player during lunchtimes at St Theresa’s Primary School. I WAS Mary Magdalene. Well, a ten year old versio...n of her, sans the sinning, believing I don’t know how to love him was about my own personal relationship with JE-SUSS (the divine, not the man—I was only ten, remember).
I’ve checked it out and, by Jesus himself, this one is going to be a HIT!
The sneak preview the other night in the Musical Theatre’s practice rooms hooked me once again, just like it did when I was ten. The belted-out anthems, the ensemble harmonies, Jesus’s top note (a high E if you really wanna know…I only wanna know-oh-oh….)… and that’s just the music! The story’s pretty gripping too. For those (and believe or not, there are some out there) who don’t know the plot, it focuses on the last days of Jesus Christ’s life, before his betrayal by Judas, his trial and crucifixion. Much of it centres on Judas and his struggle to convince Jesus to stop trying to be so jolly popular. But, sorry if I spoil the surprise, it all ends in tears.
Maybe this time, though, tears of satisfaction and fulfilment in seeing a company pull off a wholly successful and professional show. I may not be the Messiah, but I do prophesy standing ovations and full houses.
Sacrifice something to get to this show. It’s worth far more than 30 pieces of silver.
