Local thespians will be offered some excellent professional development in coming months as directing workshops are held.
Auckland freelance director and this year’s Shakespeare in the Park director, Anna Marbrook will be in Invercargill from July 17-19 for the first of a series of workshops focussing on the art of directing.
Initiated by Shakespeare in the Park Charitable Trust and managed through Venture Southland, the workshops are designed to give those with theatre experience advanced directing techniques which will develop confidence and encourage them to stage their own productions more often.
The directing project will include a follow up production season in which selected directors will stage a season of short works for the public. Marbrook will return as mentor for these productions and once staged, she will also provide a critiquing or feedback session with the directors.
Creative Projects Manager at Venture Southland, Angela Newell said this three-part process would give a good grounding for developing directors and once they had completed the process themselves, they would have no trouble embarking on their own projects in the future.
“Often the theatre communities rely on the director to come up with the next play. Hopefully directors embarking on Marbrook’s classes will develop the confidence to take on new productions,” she said.
