The fifth annual ILT Kidzone Festival was a sensational example of how a community can work together to create a magical atmosphere for children and adults alike.
Performing artist, Fiona Forrest, also known as Petunia Poodlepop with her dog Winky, assisted at the festival by getting in amongst the children to ensure that a memorable experience was had by all.
This year’s event ran for five days to encompass 165 exciting and educational activities including the Talking Hands room where children learnt about the culture of people with vision or hearing impairments, a fire engine and fire safety lesson from the New Zealand Fire Service and the Multi-Nations room where children could learn about the customs of many different cultures.
Popular attractions proved once again to be H & J Smith’s Funky Do’s and the Punk Parlour where children had their hair styled, faces painted and adorned with fake tattoos. The Mitre 10 Mega Woodcraft room was a hit, giving children a chance to show their creative side before exploring their DJ potential on Radio Kidzone. MacAulay Motors Wheelzone was another popular space full of bikes and ride-on toys.
Mr Birdbrain, as seen on New Zealand’s Got Talent, entertained crowds with two daily performances of Mr Birdbrain & the Flight of the Penguins. Daring duo Morris and Morris’ Crazy Circus Spectacular made a return to this year’s festival with amazing feats of juggling, unicycling and acrobatics that had the audience on the edge of their seats.
ILT Kidzone Festival Director Richelle Waldron would like to thank the Invercargill Licensing Trust and the Community Trust of Southland for providing funding for the festival and a big thanks to all the community groups and volunteers for making the event possible.
