More than 200 community organisations were consulted in 2010 as part of the research used to develop the Community Organisation Needs Assessment.
An outcome of this research has been the development of a resource kit by the Venture Southland community development team. The kit consists of approximately 25 information sheets which provide generic information about topics such as running committee meetings, the Charities Commission and financial reporting.
The first 12 information sheets are available now and can be downloaded from the Southland NZ website. A further 12-15 sheets will become available in the next few months.
The information has been simplified as much as possible and provides key links to other organisations.
Venture Southland Community Development Team Leader, Bobbi Brown, says the kit has been developed with Southland communities in mind and addresses the issues that they highlighted in the research.
“Our planners are really excited to have these information sheets as they deal with the key issues and will allow us to more efficiently educate and work alongside community groups” she said.
The research project was commissioned by Venture Southland and supported by the Community Trust of Southland and was undertaken by Dunedin based, Impact Consulting, between May and August 2010.
It covered all of Southland as well as West Otago and Queenstown. The aim was to identify and determine the extent of various issues, pressures and opportunities impacting on community organisations at a regional and local level.
Stakeholder meetings and focus groups held in the Southland and Gore Districts, Invercargill, Bluff and Queenstown communities identified key issues, which were then discussed with 268 community organisations by telephone.
