The best of Southland was recently showcased at the 2011 Trust Power Invercargill Southland Community Awards.

The awards were held the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club on Monday, 7 November with the Southland Motorcycle Club receiving the Supreme Winners award for its work in organising the Burt Munro Challenge.

Another major Southland event to receive honours was the ILT Kidzone Festival, run by Venture Southland. The festival volunteers won the regional child/youth section for education.

Venture Southland Settlement Support Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator for the ILT Kidzone Festival, Sue Morrison-Bailey, said as the festival activities increased over the years, so has the number of volunteers with 692 involved in this year’s festival.

“These volunteers ensure that the six days of festivities are ones to remember for the children attending. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the event from the careful planning and resourcing, to setting up the site, manning the activities and the crucial behind-the-scenes work,” Ms Morrison-Bailey said.

Over the seven years the festival has developed a leadership path for the volunteers, who can leverage this experience into work opportuntities.

Venture Southland also plays an integral role in organising the Burt Munro Challenge.

“It was great to be present at the awards to see two events we are involved in being acknowledged,” Ms Morrison-Bailey said.
