Around 60 tourism representatives from all over Southland were able to hear from industry experts at the 2011 Southland Tourism Seminar.
The seminar, which was run by Venture Southland, was held on Monday, 21 November at Ascot Park Hotel.
Venture Southland Tourism Marketing Manager, Meryl Jupp said the seminar was a great opportunity for the Southland tourism industry to gain ideas and think about how to apply these to their businesses ahead of the upcoming summer season.
Topics this year included free marketing strategies for tourism businesses, how to attract more domestic travellers and how to get more business exposure on New Zealand’s most important tourism website www.newzealand.com.
Key speakers include Josh Jenkins from Tourism Dunedin, Marijke Dunselman from Strategies Marketing Consultancy, and Kimberley Jensen from Tourism New Zealand.
A special feature of the seminar was local businessman Tony Laker, owner of Laker's House of Travel, revealing how (against advice) he started and built one of the most successful travel agencies in New Zealand. His inspirational talk was peppered with humorous stories, motivational ideas and suggestions for attracting customers to a business.
