Prime Minister John Key's announcement on 27 July about seven "Quick Start" cycle trails is excellent news for Southland and Otago, southern council leaders say.

The Mayors and Chair from the seven southern councils - Southland District, Queenstown-Lakes District, Central Otago District, Clutha District, Gore District, Invercargill City and Environment Southland - have worked together to promote the Around the Mountain Rail Trail and it is fantastic that the Prime Minister has included it in his "Quick Start" projects, Southland District Mayor Frana Cardno said.

Cycle trails from Kingston to Bluff and Around the Mountain from Walter Peak to Kingston may be a step closer to reality with preliminary investigations underway.

The seven southern-most local bodies are working with the Ministry of Economic Development and Tourism New Zealand to progress the projects.

The Southland Economic Forum on 21 May 2009 was a constructive and absorbing afternoon with plenty of positive feedback from attendees.

Key note speakers John Allen from the Ministry of Social Development, Kel Sanderson of Business and Economic Research Ltd, Dr Andy West from Ag Research and Kathryn Prusas of Tourism New Zealand spoke about workforce projections, the regional economic outlook and the agriculture and tourism sectors.

Auckland freelance director and this year’s Shakespeare in the Park director, Anna Marbrook will be in Invercargill from July 17-19 for the first of a series of workshops focussing on the art of directing.
