Local Entrepreneurs are set to present their Clean Tech ideas in a global competition.

Worldwide there is a demand for new technologies that treat effluent clean water, reduce CO2 emissions, provide renewable energy and improve the quality of life and environmental qualities.

Venture Southland Enterprise Projects Manager, Steve Canny, said clean technologies are an emerging global opportunity for business. Because Southland has an array of leading developers of clean technology, this competition provides a platform for these to be showcased globally.

“Globally, energy costs, climate change, competition for water, emission reduction targets are unleashing a wave of policy and initiatives around the world that will fundamentally alter the way in which business is undertaken.”

“Companies developing technologies that are aimed at addressing some of these global challenges will have new market opportunities. Companies that adopt new technologies to address these issues will increase both their resilience and competitiveness as well address the environmental constraints,” he said.

The Global Cleantech Open Ideas Competition is about making the world clean and green, one idea at a time. This year, some of those ideas might come from right here in Southland.

Venture Southland will provide a local face for the NZ Clean Tech Challenge (CTC), which will run from 1 August until 24 September 2010, and will organise a panel of local judges to select an overall regional winner. The judging will take place on 1 October 2010.

Anyone looking to turn their clean technology idea into a thriving business can apply to enter. Entrants can be sole proprietors, teams, early-stage companies or enterprising participants from the tertiary sector.

To be eligible, your entity must have received less than $700,000 in external private financing at the time of the competition entry. There are six categories, please make sure your idea fits into one of these: Air, Waste & Water, Energy Efficiency, Green Building, Renewables, Smart Power and Transportation.
