A past generation grew all their own veges and much of their fruit on the quarter acre section that was the kiwi dream.

That dream is coming back into reality as a new generation tries to “grow their own” because it is simply healthier, according to Southland Spirit of a Nation brand co-ordinator, Gerry Forde.

“This next generation wants to get their hands back in the soil, see the miracle of growth and their parents are quite happy too, to know that their veges only contain what they put into them,” said Mr. Forde.

There is however a generation gap of gardening skills. Enter Diacks, the nursery with over 100 years experience and their Greenhouse and Growing Expo this Saturday and Sunday.

Greg Diack has seen the level of interest in schools and youngsters radically increasing.

“You’re never sure how much they know about gardening so to take the guess work out we’ve organised ten of the best specialists in the field to run sessions for the public at this weekend’s expo.”

These free demonstrations run throughout the day and include incredible edibles growing small fruit, the art of sowing, greenhouses, raised gardens, hydroponics, growing from your own seed and herb gardening.

If that’s not enough help you can even win a special prize – a gardener for the day.

The Greenhouse and Growing Expo runs on Saturday and Sunday at Diacks Nurseries on Tweed Street with all sessions starting at 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
