Southland industry leaders presented an overview of their sectors outlining the challenges and opportunities they face in the current economic climate. Issues and opportunities specific to Southland were discussed and all agreed that the outlook for Southland is positive, based on our strong agriculture sector and increasing demand global for meat and dairy.
At the forum, political leaders agreed to vigorously pursue a decision from the Ministry of Health on the Living Cell Technologies Auckland Island Pig trials. The go-ahead for trials was subsequently granted in June.
The tourism sector is looking forward to a boost from the Rugby World Cup 2011 and an increase in Australian and domestic visitors.
The energy sector continues to offer exciting opportunities in oil, gas and lignite to liquid fuels with an announcement on the Great South Basin seismic survey expected later this year.
Opportunities such as education, cycle trails and digital communications will help grow communities and add value to Southland as a liveable province ensuring that we can continue to attract high quality workers and their families.
In a time of global economic gloom, Southland is fortunate to have bucked the national trend of recession. Our strong infrastructure, booming agriculture and experienced workforce will see us through this period in which many other regions may struggle.
