Rakiura Information & Heritage Centre

Over the previous few years a variety of community development initiatives have been investigated and the concepts developed for Stewart Island.

Such projects include the Rakiura Museum Development, Visitor Information service provision, providing a suitable location for the Stewart Island Log, Southland District Council office space requirements and Environment Southland service delivery requirements. Following consideration of the various issues facing each individual project it was decided to investigate an integrated and co-ordinated approach for the further development of these projects. The proposal is to establish the Rakiura Information and Heritage Centre.

Venture Southland has been involved extensively to date in many aspects ranging from the establishment of the Trust to drive this project; to facilitation of meetings and planning to date. Venture Southland has worked alongside the Southland District Council in securing the land for the development. Now that the land has been sorted, advanced planning can begin with each of the affected parties involved in the development. This project is still at the early planning stages and it is anticipated that Venture Southland will be involved on an ongoing basis.
