Stewart Island
Stewart Island/Rakiura located to the south of the South Island, across Foveaux Strait, is a 20 minute flight from Invercargill or an hour by ferry from Bluff.
In 2002 the island's natural world of bush, beach and birdlife was recognised with the formation of the Rakiura National Park, which encompasses 85% of the Island.
Rakiura, is a Maori word which translated means "glowing skies" and the sunrises and sunsets certainly show this.
The island is home to many native birds, including New Zealand's iconic kiwi and may provide a rare opportunity to view this shy, nocturnal flightless bird.
With stunning empty beaches, clear, clean waters, lush rainforest, flora and fauna and the untouched natural beauty of the island, there is plenty to do and enjoy.
The small township of Oban is home to approximately 400 residents. The islanders, many of whom are descended from the first Maori and European settlers, consider themselves not merely residents but guardians of the environment.
