SOUTHERN SCENIC ROUTE
The beauty of Southland’s wilderness and coastal villages are showcased along this breath-taking drive, far away from the hectic pace of urban living. The 440km route between Te Anau and Dunedin, along the southern coast, is a nature tour which a difference. Check out the South’s natural highlights and meet some of the locals including albatross, penguins, seals and dolphins.
Rolling farmland and lush native forest, sea spray washing up onto rocks, wildlife relaxing
along sandy white beaches – prepare yourself for an amazing encounter with nature along the Southern Scenic Route. Hectors dolphins surf the waves, and Yellow-eyed penguins make regular appearances at Curio Bay - the Jurassic-period forest of petrified trees.
Historic lighthouses are dotted along the coastline, keeping ships safe at night. Gemstones lie polished and shiny along the sandy beaches. Enjoy the undisturbed coastline, majestic lakes and glacially-formed splendour of Fiordland and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Area.
The raw, natural landscapes and scattered communities of the Southern Scenic Route encompass all that is magical about New Zealand.
Each part of the Southern Scenic Route has it’s own unique stories and attractions. Be sure to travel slowly (5-8 days is recommended) and explore Fiordland, Western Southland, Invercargill city, the Catlins, Clutha District and Dunedin.
