DOC and Destination Fiordland willing to walk the talk
All important tourism sustainability is about to be taken onboard big time by seven more key southern operators. Those operators include the Department of Conservation Te Anau Visitor Centre and Destination Fiordland, who have been accepted to take part in the Sustainable Tourism South Charter (STSC) programme.
The programme, run by Venture Southland in association with the Ministries for the Environment and Tourism, is in line with the New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015. “Around 30 tourism operators have already been through the programme and that total now goes to 37 in what is the final round of the three-year project,” Venture Southland enterprise project co-ordinator, Karyn Owen, said.
“Having a visitor centre and destination marketing organisation go through the programme is a natural extension from what has previously been limited to accommodation, transport and activity elements of the tourist experience.” DOC and Destination Fiordland have been represented on the steering group for the project since its inception in 2005. “They have always been keen to have their own operation go through the programme, but did not pursue it until now because spaces were limited and there was a lot of demand. It is fantastic that we have been able to include them in this final round.’’ Ms Owen said.
Tourism operators taking part in the final round of the Sustainable Tourism South charter programme, are:
- Air Milford (scenic flights in Fiordland National Park)
- Cat's Whiskers B&B (Te Anau)
- Aden Motel (Te Anau)
- Ultimate Hikes (Milford and Routeburn Track Guided Walks)
- YHA Te Anau
- Destination Fiordland (Regional Tourism Organisation)
- Department of Conservation Te Anau Visitor Centre
