Sustainable Tourism South - Charter

Below is a charter developed by Southland tourism businesses in association with Venture Southland, Destination Fiordland, Southland District Council, Environment Southland and the Department of Conservation.  It is the 'vision' and foundation of the project.

  Tourism businesses of the South live the principles of Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga* across the full spectrum of our community from city to rural to wilderness

 

	1. Operate in a manner which recognises the inseparable link between the natural environment and business sustainability… - Adopt and develop industry best practices - Encourage continuous improvement in our business - Look after ourselves, our staff and our customers
	2. Operate our business as part of the continuum by recognising and valuing the natural, cultural, and social heritage of ‘the South’ for the long-term.
	3. Share the special character of ‘the South’ through… - Authentic interpretation - Genuine experiences - Southern hospitality
	4. Build relationships to work towards a balanced environment for business, nature and the community   * Kaitiakitanga – To look after the land, sea, air and living creatures Manaakitanga – Mutual respect between hosts and visitors
