Living in Southland

In Murihiku Southland, life isn't just a routine; it's an adventure waiting to be embraced. Here, the options for a vibrant lifestyle are as vast as our stunning landscapes.

Imagine workdays with a clear division between "before" and "after." After your workday, you'll often find locals riding the waves, casting their lines for the catch of the day, hiking through pristine nature, tackling rugged mountain biking trails, or delving into the wild for an unforgettable hunting expedition. You can feel worlds away from the stresses of city life while being super accessible. Invercargill Airport is a short 5-minute drive from the city centre, and Oreti Beach is only 10 minutes away. Southland is a place where your daily routine seamlessly blends with nature's playground.

But it doesn't stop there. Southland is not just a destination; it's a launching pad. From here, you can easily reach some of the world's most coveted locations. A little less than a two-hour drive from Invercargill, you will find the lakeside town of Te Anau, your base camp to Te Rua-o-te-Moko Fiordland National Park, a realm of cascading waterfalls and the awe-inspiring Piopiotahi Milford Sound. Similarly close, you'll discover Queenstown, the adventure capital of New Zealand, and Dunedin is a 2.5-hour drive away.

For those who cherish unspoiled beauty, The Catlins, only 45 minutes from Invercargill, offers you rugged coastlines with white sandy beaches or drive 30 minutes west to the "Riviera of the South", the coastal town of Riverton. Meanwhile, Bluff, New Zealand's southernmost town, is just a twenty-minute journey from Invercargill and is world-renowned for its delectable oysters

For a truly unique experience, venture to Rakiura Stewart Island, New Zealand's third and southernmost island. With fewer than 400 permanent residents, most of the island is designated as a National Park. You can reach this island paradise with a 20-minute flight from Invercargill, a one-hour ferry ride or a 15-minute helicopter flight from Bluff.

A selection of sporting facilities, creative and heritage opportunities and events can be found in both Invercargill and Gore, along with great shops, restaurants and cafes

The region's proximity to breathtaking scenery, native wildlife, and the great outdoors means paradise is truly at your doorstep. Here, you'll have more time to enjoy the incredible range of activities and experiences on offer. So, why merely dream of an extraordinary life when you can live it every day in Southland?

Getting help & support

When you move to a new place, you will often have a lot of questions, or you may find yourself in a situation where you need some advice. There are several places you can go to get help and support.

Citizens Advice Bureau is a free and confidential information service which aims to ensure individuals know their rights and are aware of services and organisations within the community that can help them. They can help with legal issues, housing queries, employment support, consumer disputes, migrant information, financial advice, advocacy services, justice of the peace services and put you in touch with local clubs and organisations.
