Piopiotahi Milford Sound

Often called the eighth wonder of the world, Piopiotahi Milford Sound is the crown jewel of Fiordland and one of Aotearoa New Zealand's most iconic destinations. Carved by glaciers during the ice ages, this dramatic fiord is breathtaking in any weather. Forest-clad cliffs rise steeply from inky waters, waterfalls tumble from heights of up to 1,000 metres, and towering peaks pierce the sky, none more famous than Mitre Peak, which soars 1,700 metres straight from the sea.

Despite its name, Milford Sound is a fiord, formed by glacial activity rather than river erosion. It's the only fiord in New Zealand accessible by road, thanks to the engineering marvel of the Homer Tunnel, opened in 1953. The journey itself is part of the experience, winding through alpine landscapes and lush rainforest.

For over a century, Piopiotahi has drawn adventurers from around the world. The 53.5 km Milford Track, often described as the finest walk in the world, is a bucket-list experience for trampers. Scenic boat cruises offer an easy and awe-inspiring way to explore the fiord, while sea kayaking, diving, and flightseeing provide unforgettable perspectives for those seeking a little more adventure.
